Phoebe Waller-Bridge sets New York stage debut in ‘Fleabag’ for a limited 4 week run

The solo play that spawned the critically adored BBC/Amazon TV series about an oversexed Londoner struggling to get through life has opened through April 7th.

The one-person play that first turned a spotlight on the singular talents of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Fleabag, will bring the writer-performer to the New York stage for the first time early next year.

The unvarnished portrait of a self-obsessed, emotionally unfiltered contemporary London woman whose appetite for trashy sex is equaled by her peerless ability to alienate friends and family was first performed to critical plaudits at the 2013 Edinburgh Festival. It transferred to London’s Soho Theatre and was brought back for two repeat engagements. Waller-Bridge also toured with the solo show in the U.K. and internationally.

Reviewing the play in 2016 for The Hollywood Reporter, critic Stephen Dalton called it a “filthy, hilarious, heartbreaking vagina monologue.”

Fleabag was adapted into a BBC Television/Amazon Prime series in 2016 that earned Waller-Bridge a BAFTA Award for best female comedy performance. A second season will premiere in 2019.

Since the show’s breakout success, Waller-Bridge has gone on to garner further acclaim as creator and writer of the cult BBC America series Killing Eve, which also is set to return for a second season next year. In addition, she was featured as the first female droid in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

The New York run of Fleabag will be presented by Annapurna Theatre, the live stage division launched late last year of Annapurna Pictures, which also has a stake in the Broadway production of Network, currently in previews. That transfer of the London hit stars Bryan Cranston, Tatiana Maslany and Tony Goldwyn.

“I can’t wait to bring the original Fleabag to New York!” said Waller-Bridge in a statement. “It’s a dream come true! We couldn’t think of a more perfect home than the SoHo Playhouse, and we wouldn’t be here at all without the awesome team at Annapurna. This is going to be so much fun.”
