Beetlejuice Musical confirms principal casting for Broadway; sets preview date for March 28th

Because of its wild special effects and exaggerated characters, Tim Burton’s 1988 cult classic, Beetlejuice, seems right in line with today’s era of visual excess and experimentation on Broadway. But the grim story—about the accidental death of a young couple, and the profane demon steering them through the afterlife—might seem an uneasy fit for musical theater. So, director Alex Timbers, composer Eddie Perfect, and writers Scott Brown and Anthony King have taken the story in a new direction in their adaptation, which is coming to Broadway’s Winter Garden Theatre in March.

For a run of previews at the National Theatre in D.C., the musical starred Tony nominee Alex Brightman, who played the demon himself, and 17-year-old Sophia Anne Caruso, who played Lydia Deetz, Winona Ryder’s character in the original film. Both are staying on for the Broadway run, and this week, the show is announcing the rest of the cast for its Broadway opening. Below is the first picture of the cast, and Vanity Fair can exclusively report that it includes Kerry Butler (Mean Girls), Rob McClure (Avenue Q), Obie Award winner Adam Dannheisser, and Leslie Kritzer (Elf).
