Bertie Carvel and Jonny Lee Miller to lead Broadway cast of Rupert Murdoch play ‘Ink’

Carvel will reprise his Olivier Award-winning turn as the Australian media tycoon, while Miller will co-star as rogue editor Larry Lamb in James Graham’s rollicking account of their 1969 Fleet Street tabloid revolution.

Bertie Carvel will play the young Rupert Murdoch alongside Jonny Lee Miller as Larry Lamb, the maverick newspaper editor with whom he teamed to reinvent the rules of tabloid journalism in late ’60s London, in James Graham’s play Ink.

Directed by Rupert Goold, the production comes to Broadway after premiering to rave reviews at London’s Almeida Theatre in June last year, before segueing to a hit West End run. Carvel won an Olivier Award for his role as the brash Murdoch in Graham’s rollicking chronicle of the media magnate’s early days on Fleet Street, turning the failing newspaper The Sun into a must-read, mass-market daily.

Manhattan Theatre Club is collaborating with the Almeida and leading Brit producer Sonia Friedman on the transfer, which begins previews April 2 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre ahead of an April 24 opening.

Carvel returns to Broadway after originating the role of the monstrous headmistress Miss Trunchbull in the Roald Dahl musical Matilda, which earned him a Tony nomination in 2013, following an earlier Olivier win for the part in London.

Miller was last on Broadway in 2009, starring opposite Sienna Miller and Marin Ireland in Patrick Marber’s Strindberg update, After Miss Julie. In 2010 he shared an Olivier with his co-star Benedict Cumberbatch for Danny Boyle’s production of Frankenstein, in which the two actors alternated in the roles of Victor Frankenstein and the Creature.

Additional casting and creative team for Ink are to be announced.
