Watch the touching onstage proposal at Broadway’s Play That Goes Wrong

Frank Alliegro and Maura Spillane met four years ago as castmates in a production of Sweeney Todd; she was fixing set pieces and he had to know her.

On October 21, Alliegro and Spillane took in the evening performance of the now longest-running play on Broadway, The Play That Goes Wrong. The comedy is, true to title, a show in which everything goes wrong, including onstage scenic mishaps. Prior to the start of the show, the actors call up an audience member to help repair falling set pieces. On Saturday, that audience member was Spillane. So it seemed perfectly normal that Spillane would be called up during the curtain call to recognize her earlier work. That’s when Alliegro popped the question.

The Play That Goes Wrong began in London, written by best friends Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields, with original music by Rob Falconer. Producers, including Kevin McCollum, Star Wars director J.J. Abrams, and Catherine Schrieber, decided to bring the show to Broadway.
